About Carrie Leaf, MS, LMFT
* OFFERING WALK AND TALK THERAPY. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN TAKING A WALK DURING YOUR SESSION, CARRIE IS MORE THAN HAPPY TO GET OUT OF THE OFFICE AND INTO THE FRESH AIR. JUST LET HER KNOW! Just check out the benefits to walking and talking below:
BENEFITS TO WALKING OUTSIDE:
It improves self-perception and self-esteem, mood and sleep quality, and it reduces stress, anxiety and fatigue. Physically active people have up to a 30% reduced risk of becoming depressed, and staying active helps those who are depressed recover.” - https://www.walkingforhealth.org.uk/get-walking/why-walk/healthy-minds
The mental health benefits of going for a walk can last for 7 hours, according to pioneering new study - https://www.countryliving.com/uk/wellbeing/news/a180/mental-health-benefits-nature-outdoors-study/
Did you know regular exercise helps maintain good physical and mental health? When you go for a walk it’s not just your body that benefits – the way you think and feel changes too!
When you exercise, chemicals called endorphins are released in the brain, which have a positive impact on your mood. Exercise also produces hormones that can improve sleep, help release muscle tension and reduce inflammation.
Active people develop a sense of achievement and purpose. Taking a walk gives you a chance to take time out, think and reflect. As confidence and self-esteem improve, you’re also more inclined to reach out and connect with others. - https://walking.heartfoundation.org.au/benefits-of-walking/blog/walking-for-good-physical-and-mental-health

I am an independently licensed mental health counselor/therapist/consultant and supervisor providing services in the Des Moines Metro area. I have worked in a variety of settings including hospitals, community mental health, residential, the Iowa National Guard, Drake University, and private practice.
I completed my Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Northern Iowa with a major in psychology and a minor in sociology. Following my undergraduate work, I completed my graduate work at Iona College in New Rochelle, NY earning my Master of Science in marriage and family therapy.
I have completed training in EMDR therapy. EMDR is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma.
In my therapeutic stance I like to think holistically and make sure to pay attention to the connection between mind/body/spirit. My eclectic approach to therapy has roots in Rogerian Client-Centered Therapy and Systems Theory, often pulling from cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness-based skill sets. I believe in every human's capacity to heal and grow with the right combination of hard work and support. It is a true honor to me to be a part of your healing and growth process with you.
Other interests include spending time with friends and family, music, being outdoors, exercise, good food, trying new things/experiences, traveling, and hanging out with my boxer dogs, Jax and Opie.
